The Largest Public Schools in the United States

By the Public School Stats Editorial Team · Last updated: October 2026

The 40 largest individual public school campuses in the country, ranked by enrollment in the 2023–24 NCES Common Core of Data School Membership file.

23,589students at the largest campus, Commonwealth Charter Academy CS (Harrisburg, PA), 2023–24

The largest public schools in America enroll more students than many entire districts. The campuses ranked here — drawn from 98,667 schools with reported enrollment in the 2023–24 CCD School Membership file — are mostly very large comprehensive high schools in fast-growing suburban counties, joined by a few statewide virtual academies and career centers whose “campus” is partly or wholly online. The CCD school type in the source file identifies virtual and alternative schools; readers comparing a virtual academy’s headcount with a physical campus should keep that difference in mind, because staffing, facilities and lunch figures mean different things for the two models.

How to use this ranking

Campus size on its own says little about quality; it does shape logistics, course breadth and anonymity. Very large high schools can offer dozens of advanced and career courses that a 400-student school cannot staff, while smaller campuses offer different advantages. This site’s contribution is narrower and more basic: the figures are the federal government’s own counts, labeled by year, grouped the same way for every school. For city-by-city lists, browse the city index; for the agencies that run these campuses, the district index; and for how the counts are collected, the collection methodology.

Data: National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data and EDFacts, retrieved October 2026, from nces.ed.gov. Enrollment, staffing and lunch figures are for the 2023–24 school year; finance figures are fiscal year 2024 (school year 2023–24) unless a page labels them otherwise.
